The argument

The book holds two positions at once and never picks: she was made — something produced her, mostly before you existed — and she is an adult, accountable for what she did with what she was handed. Part I takes the word “whore” apart before turning it on anyone, because the charge in this book is never her sex life; it's specific conduct toward a child — lying, using, abandoning, manipulating, disappearing.

The book corrects its own headline number rather than letting the more dramatic one stand — a national survey found “with ten percent having cut off a parent or a child,” not the twenty-seven percent lifetime figure for cutting off any family member, and the book states the distinction explicitly. It also declines a claim the topic invites: “nothing in this book says estrangement is rising, and a survey taken now cannot say anything about 1975.”
